今から90年ほど前、この地に大学が根を下ろしたころから、学生たちは本学を「雲と自由の住むところ」と称え、それが体球网,足球即时比分の精神を象徴する言葉として受け継がれてきました。皆さんはここで「雲」や「自由」という言葉を聞いて、何を思い浮かべるでしょうか。印象は人それぞれかと思いますが、まずは「雲」について、私自身が思い描くイメージをお話しします。ある晴れた日、皆さんの中の誰かがこの木々に囲まれたキャンパスの一角で、ふと空を見上げたとき、そこに、印象的な形をした雲が浮かんでいるのを見て、思わず足を止める。そして、その瞬間の小さな感動を、すぐ近くにいる友人と共有しようと声をかける——そんな何気ない情景が思い浮かびます。一つ一つの雲は、それぞれに固有の名前など持たず、形を留めることもなく、刻一刻と姿を変えながら流れていきます。そのつかの間の変わりゆく雲はそれを見上げる人の姿と重なり合い、まるで新入生である皆さん自身のこれからの大きな変化を予見するかのようです。
今、皆さんは入学式を迎えたばかりで、隣や前後に座る人がどのような人なのか、まだよく知らないことでしょう。壇上にいる私たち教職員も、目の前に並ぶ新入生の皆さんを、ひとつの集団として認識しているに過ぎません。しかし、これから大学生活を送る中で、それぞれの個性が鮮やかに花開き、やがては周囲の人々、さらには社会全体から、一人の確固たる存在として認識されるようになります。その変化の過程こそが、体球网,足球即时比分での学びの本質であると私は考えています。
では、この大学で何を意識し、何を目指すことが大切なのでしょうか。私は、「雲と自由」という言葉の中の、「自由」にこそ、本学での学びの本質があると考えています。
大学生活が始まると、日々の活動や将来の目標において、これまで以上に多くの選択肢が広がり、時間の使い方もかなり自由になります。しかし、そのことは単に何らかの制約から一部が解放されたという、いわば消極的?受動的な自由に過ぎません。そのような自由に甘んじていると、すぐに新たな壁に直面し、本質的な自由には決して到達できません。
私が皆さんに求めたいのは、「真の自由」、すなわち積極的?能動的な自由です。発言力のある人の意見に考え無しに従うのではなく、また、世の中の大きな流れにただ流されるのではなく、「何が本当に大切なのか」「より良い方向へ変えていくにはどうすべきなのか」を深く考え、物事の本質を見極め、勇気をもって決断し、行動する——それこそが、真の自由です。そのためには、自らの理性を鍛え、真実を公正に見極める努力が不可欠です。また、自分が信じる道を突き進むための覚悟、さらには、共に歩む仲間との出会いや、互いを思いやる心も必要でしょう。自由を追求するということは、すなわち、自らの可能性を広げ、より大きな人間へと成長することに他なりません。

Congratulations on your admission.
On this special day, we warmly welcome all of you as new students of Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology. Our current students and faculty members are truly delighted to have you join our academic community.
Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology is more than just a place for acquiring knowledge. Through learning here, you will have invaluable opportunities to meet diverse people, engage in practical research activities, and gain a variety of experiences. At certain moments, you may find yourself deeply absorbed in something, discovering what you want to dedicate your life to and envisioning the role you wish to play in society. We firmly believe that our university serves as a place for such personal and intellectual growth.
As you may know, our university boasts expansive, green campuses in Fuchu and Koganei, located in the heart of Tokyo. Within this privileged environment, research of an exceptionally high standard is conducted every day. In this privileged environment, research of an exceptionally high level is conducted daily. For example, the number of top 10% papers—a qualitative indicator of academic publication quality—has been increasing in recent years, and our university now ranks third among Japanese universities on a per-faculty basis. Additionally, our collaboration with the industrial sector is always at the top level.
This achievement is a testament to the fact that our students and faculty members deeply cherish the moments when they can fully dedicate themselves to their chosen fields of study. Furthermore, about 90 years ago, when our university first took root in this region, students praised it as “the place where clouds and freedom reside.” This phrase has since been passed down as a symbol of the spirit of Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology.

Now, what comes to your mind when you hear the words "clouds" and "freedom"? Everyone may have different impressions, but let me share my own thoughts on "clouds."
On a sunny day, one of you might find yourself in a corner of the campus, surrounded by trees, glancing up at the sky. There, a cloud with an impressive shape drifts by, causing you to pause for a moment. Struck by a small yet profound sense of wonder, you call out to a friend beside you, eager to share the moment. Each cloud has no name, no fixed form, continuously shifting as it floats across the sky. These fleeting, ever-changing clouds mirror those who gaze upon them, as if foretelling the great transformations that await you in the future.
At this moment, as you sit among your fellow students, you may not yet know much about those around you. Likewise, we faculty members see you as a collective group of new students. However, as you progress through university life, your individuality will shine through, and you will eventually establish yourself as a unique presence recognized by your peers and society. This transformative journey is the essence of learning at Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology.
What, then, should you keep in mind and strive for during your time here? I believe that the true essence of learning at our university lies in the word "freedom."
As you embark on your university journey, you will encounter an expanding array of choices—choices about your studies, future goals, and how you spend your time. However, this newfound freedom is not merely the absence of restrictions; it is a passive form of freedom. If you settle for this, you may soon find yourself facing new challenges and barriers, unable to reach true freedom.
What I urge you to pursue is "genuine freedom"—a proactive and dynamic freedom. Instead of blindly following influential opinions or merely going along with societal trends, I encourage you to ask: "What truly matters?" and "How can I contribute to positive change?" True freedom lies in deeply contemplating these questions, discerning the essence of issues, making bold decisions, and taking action. To achieve this, you must cultivate your reasoning skills, develop the ability to objectively assess truth, and strengthen your resolve to pursue your convictions. You will also need companions who walk the path alongside you, as well as a sense of empathy and solidarity. The pursuit of freedom, in this sense, is synonymous with broadening your potential and growing into a greater version of yourself.
Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology is a research university dedicated to nurturing individuals who can uphold their beliefs, think critically, and take decisive action based on deep reflection. The ability to analyze, conceptualize, and act with conviction is fundamental not only in scientific endeavors—where one uncovers unknown phenomena and generates new knowledge—but also in life itself. Such sincerity and intellectual rigor will naturally attract people to you, enabling you to inspire and mentor the next generation, ultimately shaping a better society.
How can we harmonize nature and human activity to build a sustainable future? What role should we play in an increasingly uncertain world? These are some of the critical challenges you, as students of Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, will confront. At the same time, society places high expectations on your ability to tackle these issues. Here, you will find an environment that fosters free and meaningful learning, providing you with the tools to meet these challenges.
I sincerely hope that during your time here, you will explore your own potential, discover previously unseen strengths, and find a path you wish to dedicate your life to.
